The 8th International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation will be holding a film screening at which we will show a selection of videos created by those interested in language documentation and conservation.
The video screening event will be held on Wednesday, March 1 from 10:00 am -12:30 pm HST in our Gather space. For a full breakdown of the timeline, see below:
- 10:00-10:15 am: Organized tour and tutorial of Gather
- 10:30-11:45 am: Video Screening
- 11:45 am-12:15 pm: Live Q&A with Directors
- 12:15-1:00 pm: Organized tour and tutorial of Gather, extra time allowed to explore social garden

Video 1: Hisamatsu album (13:18 runtime)
Dr. Sachiyo Fujita-Round
This short film focuses on accounts retold by Chiyo and Shizu YONAHA and Kiyo KUGA (voice appearance only) of their memories surrounding the Haari festival in both Miyakoan and Japanese. Also included are interviews with Miyako people who experienced the Japanese “language-tag” system during schooling, and their experiences.
Video 2: Khroskyabs Videos (6:55 runtime)
Yu Lha
Various short videos produced by the director when she was an undergraduate about her native language Khroskhyabs (Rgyalrongic), includes an animation, a song and the author conducting dialogues in Khroskhyabs with other students.
Video 3: Fluent Comprehender Demonstration (9:41 runtime)

This short video follows several Passamquoddy speakers playing a card game and discussing their experiences in the schooling system in which they were abused physically for speaking their language. The second half includes both speakers and ‘fluent comprehenders’ reaction and feedback to the initial video.
Video 4: Tehuantepec Retroalimentacion (7:13 runtime)

This video follows Eduardo, a young Zapotec artist living in the Isthmus of Oaxaca, who has organized a community presentation of videos. He encourages speaking Zapotec among the participants, who are moved to do so in the feedback portion of the video.
Video 5: Gyani Maiya (23:00 runtime)

“Gyani Maiya” follows the story of Gyani Maiya Sen-Kusunda, the Kusunda community elder who was once presumed to be the last living speaker of the Kusunda language of Nepal. It also follows her younger sister Kamala who along with researcher Uday Raj Aaley work to preserve Kusunda by teaching it to local children.
