What does Linguistic Society of Hawai'i (LSH) offer?

Funding for Speakers and Workshops
Since LSH is a Registered Independent Organization (RIO), we have access to University funding for speakers, workshops, and other events that will benefit the UH community. If you want to suggest a speaker, workshop series, or other event idea, contact our Academic Committee.

Community Service opportunities
In the Spring of 2004, LSH and the Department of Linguistics started the Language Documentation Project (now known as the Language Documentation Center (LDC)) as a way for students to help speakers of lesser documented languages learn how to document their own languages. This project allows students of the Department to improve their Linguistic skills and to meet speakers of a variety of different languages. It also allows speakers to learn basic Linguistic documentation skills and further their interests in Language development. To get involved, contact the Directer of the LDC.

Access to Department and University Policy
Our Faculty Representative attends faculty meetings on behalf of student interests. If you have concerns about Department policies, please get in touch with our Faculty Representative.

Our GSO Representative attends monthly GSO meetings which discuss University policies pertaining to Graduate Students. If you wish to become involved or have an issue which you need resolved, please contact the GSO Representative.

Social events
In the past we have organized the Lanai party, Halloween party, and Spring Ling Thing. New events include a murder game, and Halloween activities. If you want to get involved with Social events, please contact the Social Committee.

Funding for student research
If you need funding for your research, you may apply from the GSO.You can apply for up to approximately $1000 for use in purchasing airline tickets, subject fees, conference fees, and other expenses. You may apply more than once though funding is harder to get after the first time. Try to apply as soon as you find out you need the money, since the GSO makes funding decisions only once a month. If you have any questions, please contact the GSO Representative.
